TracePro, RayViz, and OSLO: License Options
When purchasing TracePro®, RayViz™, or OSLO®, you choose from four license types: single-user USB, single-user soft, network USB, and network soft. The right choice comes down to two decisions: where the license lives (one machine or a shared server) and how it's stored (a portable USB dongle or a machine-locked soft license). This page walks through both decisions and the practical considerations that usually settle them.
Single-user vs. Network
Single-user
- The license is stored on a PC or in a dongle plugged into a local PC. The software runs on the same computer/machine.
Network
- The license is stored on a central server in the network. It is used by PCs as a floating license.
- Network License Server - Operating System Options
USB license vs. Soft license
USB License
- License is stored on a physical USB dongle.
- Portable - can move to another computer.
Soft license
- Linked to the computer’s hardware/software.
- Not portable - only works on the system for which it was created.
- Deactivates if moved to a different computer or if key system identifiers change.
Which combination fits your team?
A single engineer, one workstation: a single-user soft license is the simplest: no dongle to manage, activated directly on the machine. Choose single-user USB instead if you expect to move between machines (office workstation and lab PC, for example).
A team sharing seats: network licenses float: any PC on the network can check out a seat from the license server, up to your seat count. This maximizes utilization when more engineers than concurrent users need access. See Network License Server – Operating System Options for supported server environments.
Secure or air-gapped environments: all license types work without internet access; license updates can be transferred by file. Defense and aerospace customers routinely run TracePro and OSLO on isolated networks.
Special considerations for all licenses
- License Replacement: Lost or damaged USB dongles and deactivated Soft licenses can be replaced.
- Virtual Machines: Licenses are supported.
- Remote Access: Works with Windows Remote Desktop (other remote tools should be tested).
- No Internet Access: Licenses work offline, though some update tasks may require alternative methods.
- Multiple Instances: You can run multiple instances of the software on one computer, counting as one license.
- Multiple Products
- With a combined license, one license covers all products.
- Single-product licenses can be used on separate computers.
- Maintenance and support: every license includes a maintenance and support subscription period. An active subscription covers updates to the latest release, license replacement, and engineering support; see the Support Policy for what's included as subscriptions expire.
